Local elections In Moldova confirmed European vector of the country

“Local elections took place on the 14th and 28th of June in Moldova. Moldovan electorate demonstrated political maturity and put their trust in elected representatives who are focusing upon concrete solution of the communities’ problems.

The results show a high overweight for pro-European ruling coalition both at the first tier (municipalities) and at the second tier (raions) of local governments. Indeed, at the first tier, mayors from pro-European parties gained more than 85% of municipalities in Moldova. Then in the second tier, pro-European coalitions won 25 out 32 raions (the process is still ongoing and final results will be known in the upcoming weeks).

CENTRAL GOVERNMENT FOLLOWS THE EXAMPLE FROM LOCAL GOVERNMENTS

Local elections triggered a positive change at the central level. Indeed, in late July, the Moldavian central government has followed this example as it was finally able to create a pro-European ruling majority coalition and to sign a Coalition agreement. Thus the fundamental direction of the country towards EU pre-accession is now confirmed.”
